The Iowa Avenue Campus is a one-block-wide
eastward
peninsula of the UI developed with a sciences
emphasis,
and anchored by the College of Liberal Arts
and Sciences
programs.
This area contains some of
the oldest structures
on campus, dating back to 1899
when Seashore Hall was
the orignal University Hospital.
The site was also home to the
Mechanics
Academy
building
(since removed), where the
first UI classes
were held.
While a great deal of renewal and new construction has
taken place in recent years, other aging and functionally
obsolete buildings at the east end are in need of renewal
and
revitalization. Current studies are looking at how best
to renew
and reuse the area surrounding the Seashore
Hall block. Click on the following links to see more detail on the early planning for
the Seashore Hall
block: existing, capacity study and the massing model.
