The River Valley Campus is anchored by the 1927-built Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). It also boasts the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories (IATL, below), a building designed by signature architect Frank Gehry. This part of campus also contains the only remaining open activity space, Hubbard Park.
The master plan emphasizes the importance of engaging the Iowa River and protecting the existing greenspace along and around Hubbard Park. The banks of the Iowa River will be protected and developed into a naturalistic campus park to maximize enjoyment of the river landscape. This proposed new area will be called "River Park". River Park will be planned and enhanced as a positive element emphasizing continuity of natural scenery and pedestrian access.
Renovation of the Iowa Memorial Union and a new River Terrace bring UI activity to the Iowa River.
The IMU River Terrace and the River Park area will
provide venues that can be used for performances,
learning, recreation, and informal gatherings.
