EARTH WEEK RECYCLING EVENTS
Student groups recognized for recycling efforts

The Iowa DNR, Grainger, City Carton and Coca Cola congratulated students representing UI Student Government, UI Environmental Coalition, Associated Residence Halls and Future Physicians for the Environment.
UI Student Government (UISG) leaders, UI Environmental Coalition (UIEC), Future Physicians for the Environment (FPE) and Associated Residence Halls (ARH) received recognition from City Carton, Inc. on Friday, April 25, 2008. The student organizations contributed to the UI's 19.8 percent increase in material recycled through City Carton and diverted from the landfill, from 1,204 tons in 2006, to 1,443 tons in 2007.
The student groups also unveiled their new marketing campaign which includes Cambus posters stating, "Half of the University of Iowa is wasted....50% of UI's garbage is recyclable". Attending were representatives from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, whose grant has allowed the UI to purchase plastic collection bins for the campus grounds through the DNR's Solid Waste Alternatives Program, as well as representatives from the Coca-Cola Company, who funded a Recycling Bin Grant from the National Recycling Coalition, and the East Central Iowa Council of Governments. Vice President and Dean of Students Phillip Jones and Facilities Management staff were also in attendance. The Press-citizen also covered this story, "University of Iowa honors students for green work".
