For the calendar year 2007, students, faculty and staff at The University of Iowa generated the following waste:

Power Plant Ash

All boiler ash produced by the UI power plant is hauled to PC/Basic Materials in Waterloo to reclaim a limestone quarry. The 2006 total was 18,918 tons.

  • The UI is generating 11% less total refuse today than a decade ago.
  • A pilot project turned 17 tons of UI food waste from HIllcrest Food Services into 45 cubic yards of high nitrogen compost (UI Compost Project)
  • The UI is recycling carpet during Planning, Design & Construction projects.
  • The UI is conducting move-out day recycling.
  • Directories and phone books are recycled through the normal commingled process or through arrangements with UI Business Services.
  • The UI designs and builds central recycling stations and deskside recycling into all new buildings. All academic and research facilities have deskside recycling.
Recycling bins are located in all University of Iowa academic buildings, sports complexes, residence halls and recreational facilities.
