Recent Accomplishments and Awards

2007

The West Campus Chilled Water Plant Renovation - Phase 2A project won Grand Place Award in the Buildings and Systems Category of the 2008 Engineering Excellence Award sponsored by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Iowa.  (11/07)

The Work Fluorescent Lamp Management Team including FM staff Bill Ciha, Darlene Clausen, Jeff Harney, Rick Hellwig, Mike Lee, Duane Lown, Valerie Richard, Scott Slee and Mike Valde won an IOWA (Improving Our Workplace Award) for fall 2007. The team developed a process to ensure that universal wastes (bulbs, batteries, and mercury containing equipment) would be handled, tracked and disposed of properly. A training program was also developed. (11/07)

American School & University published architectural portfolio 2007 this month and featured Kinnick Stadium--awarded outstanding design for renovation and modernization. (11/07)

The University of Iowa received a Recycling Bin Grant from the National Recycling Coalition (NRC). The Bin Grant program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company and will allow the UI to increase recycling efforts both inside and outside campus buildings. (11/07)

UI's Kinnick Stadium Renovation is the 2007 Masonry Institute of Iowa Architectural Design Grand Award Winner. (10/07)

A new committee charged with providing input, advice and recommendations on a number of architectural topics that affect the UI campus was convened in September. The Architectural Review Committee consists of design professionals who have a vested interested in maintaining the important character of the campus, the buildings and space between. (09/07)

Two UI buildings were recognized by AIA Iowa - the UI West Campus Tennis & Recreation Center received one of five Design Merit awards in the state and Carver-Hawkeye Arena received the 25-Year Award. (09/07)

The 2007-2008 Update to the Campus Master Plan was released. (09/07)

BuildingsmagazineUI's Facilities Management made Buildings magazine's annual "Who's Who in the Buildings Market: the A List" for the third year in a row. (09/07)

UI President Sally Mason and Roya Stanley, Iowa’s new Director of the Office of Energy Independence, were among the speakers at this year's Energy Expo on the UI Pentacrest, September 5 . (09/07)

FM's Route 66 Safety Program was selected to receive APPA's Effective and Innovative Practices Award for reducing injuries and saving money. This is the second APPA Effective and Innovative Practices Award that FM has received in two years (05/07). Route 66 also won CACUBO's 2007 RCB Capital Markets Best Practices Program - second place (10/07) and appeared in APPA's Facilities Manager. (10/07)

Facilities Management hosted its third annual Safety Best Practices Conference Wednesday, June 27, to showcase the organizations in Iowa with the best practices in safety.

The University of Iowa Old Capitol Restoration Project, that restored the historic Old Capitol following the fire in 2001, won the Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture for Restoration and Preservation from the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) (05/07).


The UI was awarded the 2007 Sika Sarnafil Sustainable Roofing Performance Award for its commitment to sustainability, demonstrated by the decision to recycle the old roof on the Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Press Release (.pdf) (05/07).


The UI released the Energy Conservation and Management Strategic Plan . This
ambitious and money-saving plan provides strategies to use more renewable energy, increase energy efficiencies, encourage energy conservation, attain energy security, ensure systems reliability, and more. (02/07)




Art Building West was chosen to receive a 2007 Institute Honor Award for Architecture from The American Institute of Architects (AIA) (01/07).

The Old Capitol Fire Restoration project and the Art Building West project were honored for Excellence in Architecture by AIA on Friday, September 29th.


Energy Expo 2006 took place on the UI campus and downtown Iowa City, Wednesday, Sept. 27 with over 100 exhibits and 40 presentations. For more information, visit: http://www.facilities.uiowa.edu/energyexpo.htm

UI Art Building West was featured in the prestigious Japanese publication, GA Document 92. The 22-page spread makes a striking presentation of this recently completed UI building with full-color and black-and-white photos of the spaces, materials, and textures.

The State of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recognized Facilities Management for Environmental Excellence and Leadership by participating in “The Pollution Prevention Intern Program”.

A Building Commissioning team was established in fall 2005 to “develop a comprehensive total building commissioning program for the University of Iowa that represents the best practices of peer institutions, tailored to meet the University of Iowa’s needs, in order to produce higher quality and higher performance buildings.”

In January of 2006, a new safety program, Route 66, was put into place to change the way Facilities Management staff think about working safely. Teams earn points for consistent safety practices throughout the year and earn rewards and recognition along the way, Route 66. The vision for safety is “zero injuries”.

2006 was the second year FM hosted a Safety Best Practices Conference, Individual Responsibility and Leadership in Safety, which showcased organizations in Iowa with the best practices in safety. This conference offered a rare opportunity to learn from organizations with the top safety records in Iowa.

Facilities Management Design and Construction Services Received a Recreation Paving Award from the Asphalt Paving Association of Iowa awarded Design and Construction Services for its work on the outdoor tennis courts at the new West Campus Tennis-Recreation Center. The project was nominated for the award by by L.L. Pelling Contractors, Iowa City. For more information, visit:
