Conference Tracks- Overview
The program for this year’s conference has the theme of Leadership in Sustainability while bringing together timely information on financial stewardship in this challenging economic cycle.

Track A: Sustainability
According to the EPA, Sustainability means “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” This track focuses on how this is applied to the facilities world in the areas of grounds and green cleaning. What’s the impact on the bottom line? What about the triple bottom line? We’ll also look at the role of a sustainability coordinator and how to compute the carbon footprint on your campus.

Track B: Financial & Human Resource Issues
Leaders in Facilities Management usually have technical expertise but can always improve on their soft skills and in understanding how to deal with HR regulations such as FMLA and ADA compliance. This track also looks at how costs are allocated, and the Midwest Higher Education Compact buying consortia for energy efficiency, health care insurance and services.

Track C: Operations & Best Practices
Looking at the economics, safety, and sustainability of several operational issues with an eye toward best practices, this track includes the Tree Campus USA program, implementing a cost-effective recycling program, safely managing your Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) Laboratories, and campus security/access control systems.

Track D: Administration
Facilities Leaders are expected to understand, plan, recommend, and report on a wide variety of issues, including such topics as the President’s Climate Commitment, Facilities Performance Indicators, urban design on campus, and management reporting.

NEW THIS YEAR: The University of Iowa is hosting three Field Experience Learning opportunities. These concurrent 3 ½ hour segments include a bus trip with video/audio presentations on the topic, on-site learning with UI Facilities Management staff, and follow-up Q/A on the return bus ride.

  1. Main Campus Power Plant: Biomass was recently introduced to this coal-fired plant. Learn the story of how it was approved and how the UI has avoided tons of emissions in the past few years.
  2. LEED Building--University Hygienic Lab: Iowa’s public health and environmental lab is nearing completion of a new facility on the Oakdale Campus. It is a 113,000 sq ft research and administrative facility with a minimum LEED silver certification. Some of the features include: biological safety level 3 laboratories and controlled access/security/cctv system.
  3. Flood Recovery & Mitigation – The Flood of 2008 dealt a huge blow to the UI Arts Campus on the west bank of the Iowa River on the UI Main Campus. Get a glimpse of flood prevention efforts, the devastating effect of the flood waters, and a look at our plans for the future.
