MOVING SERVICES Moving Day PACKING BOXES: Pack all small items in boxes, which should have tape across the bottom to make them more secure. Pack boxes full, so that they do not crush when stacked. Close boxes either by criss-crossing the top flaps or taping them closed. Label boxes with your name and the room number where movers should deliver them. Place all labels on the sides of boxes, not on top, so that the movers can read labels when boxes are stacked. PACKING OTHER ITEMS: Furniture, and anything else that cannot be boxed, must be labeled with your name and the number of the room it moves to. Empty all file drawers, desk drawers and bookcases, and pack contents in boxes. COMPUTERS will be disconnected, and reconnected at your new building, by you and your computer staff. Label your computer, monitor, printer, keyboard, and anything else too large to be boxed. The moving crew will transport computer equipment on rolling carts for gentle treatment. PERSONAL ITEMS that could be damaged must be moved by you. This includes desk lamps, radios, plants and artwork. Movers are not insured for damage to your personal belongings. MOVING DAY ADVICE: On moving day, it will take time for movers to take your things out of the building, load their truck, and get things delivered to your new office. You may find it most efficient to pack one box that you will transport yourself, which would include not only personal items but your phone and materials for any projects that you must attend to right away. Please do not plan to move more than one box yourself on moving day, as the move will be slowed if many people are using the elevators. If your things are packed and labeled, you need not be present for the move. It is helpful to post a sketch at the new location showing where to place furniture. It will save time if the movers are able to place furniture where it belongs without rearranging. PHONES: Unplug phones from the wall. Wrap and secure the cord with a rubber band or twist tie. If you are not moving the phone yourself, pack it in a box. Phone service should be active when you move in, or very soon thereafter. VOICE MAIL remains active while your phone is being moved. You may want to change your message to let callers know you are moving. KEYS from your current location should be collected and returned to your departmental representative coordinating the move who will arrange for their return to Key Services. Keys for your new location will be available from your departmental representative. AFTER THE MOVE: Flatten boxes and stack them in a secure location to be picked up by Facilities Management for reuse. Call Facilities Management to have them picked up, 335-5110. YOUR CURRENT SPACE should be left neat. Dispose of all trash before you leave. Large personal items (such as couches or chairs) cannot be discarded in the trash and must be removed from the campus by the department. Contact Surplus Stores (335-5001) who may be available to remove these items.
