Environmental Services

Mission

The mission of Environmental Services is to ensure that The University of Iowa is in compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations. Environmental Services reports to Planning, Design & Construction within Facilities Management.

What We Do

Asbestos
Responsible for enforcement of Clean Air Act regulations which govern renovation or demolition activities which could disturb asbestos containing building materials. Duties include: Sampling / Asbestos Surveys, Remediation Oversight, Training, Recordkeeping & Outreach.

Stormwater
Compliance with Stormwater discharge permitting / NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System), SWPPP’s (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans). Review and approve site plans, site monitoring, outreach & education. More...
Lead
Compliance with Safe Lead Work Practices under OSHA lead in construction practices 29 CFR 1926.62 and RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) disposal requirements for lead hazardous wastes.
Indoor Air Quality
First Stage Investigation of Indoor Air Quality complaints, including air sampling, occupant interviews and evaluation of identified spaces.
Hazwopper
Identify and assist with hazardous material handling and waste spill clean-up projects per Regulation 29 CFR 1910.120
Well Testing
Collect and record data and retrieve samples from monitoring wells on University of Iowa Property where contamination from potentially harmful substances may have occurred per direction from Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Radon
Sampling of Radon Levels in University of Iowa occupied buildings.
