Student group recycling
Student groups coordinate weekend recycling
events in residence halls.


Students, faculty and staff at The University of Iowa actively participate in the comprehensive recycling program on campus which includes paper, cardboard, glass, plastic and aluminum containers, and reduce the amount of material sent to landfill.


Daum paper project - Over 120 students in Daum Hall worked together to raise awareness of recycling, and transported over 2,000 lbs of paper to City Carton.

Earth Week Recycling Recognition and Celebration -
The UI celebrated and recognized campus recycling efforts during Earth Week, April 21-25.

UI Waste Characterization Sorting Project

Read about the recycling sorting projects at the UI Main Library and Hubbard Park. Student and staff volunteers sorted waste to determine how much waste currently going to the landfill could be diverted to recycling. "Watching their waste" November 30, 2007, Cedar Rapids Gazette.

UI Receives Recycling Bin Grant from the National Recycling Coalition (NRC). The Bin Grant program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company and will allow the UI to increase recycling efforts both inside and outside campus buildings.

DNR Grant allows purchase of plastic collection bins - the Iowa Department of Natural Resources grant has allowed the UI to purchase plastic collection bins for the campus grounds through the DNR's Solid Waste Alternatives Program.

Food Waste Composting Project Success - The first load of food waste compost is now ready for use. In addition, student Holly Moriarty will be awarded this year's Innovative Waste Management Project Award from the Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operations.

Power Plant Ash

All boiler ash produced by the UI power plant is hauled to PC/Basic Materials in Waterloo to reclaim a limestone quarry. The 2006 total was 18,918 tons.

  • The UI is generating 11% less total refuse today than a decade ago.
  • A pilot project is underway to compost about 52 tons of food waste from Hillcrest's
    Food Services. (UI Compost Project)
  • The UI is recycling carpet during Design & Construction Services projects.
  • The UI is conducting move-out day recycling.
  • Directories and phone books are recycled through the normal commingled process or through arrangements with UI Business Services.
  • The UI designs and builds central recycling stations and deskside recycling into all new buildings. All academic and research facilities have deskside recycling.
How to Recycle@UI

Recycling bins are located in all University of Iowa academic buildings, sports complexes, residence halls and recreational facilities.
