Biomass Energy at the University of Iowa
The University of Iowa Power Plant has an innovative partnership with Quaker Oats on the biomass fuel project. The University uses a biomass material, oat hulls, produced by the Cedar Rapids, IA Quaker Oats facility. The power plant burns this residual materials from the cereal making process in conjunction with coal. Both facilities are benefiting greatly from this innovative technique.
At the Power Plant, staff strive to meet the energy needs of the campus while protecting our natural resources by using biomass as a renewable fuel source. Because of this commitment, the Power Plant has earned two 2003 Governor’s Iowa Environmental Excellence Awards for air quality and energy efficiency/renewable energy.
