Wind Energy REsearch Turbine

A UI Wind Turbine2.4kW wind turbine stretching approximately thirty-seven feet tall has been installed in front of the Madison Street Services Building.

“The turbine is intended to be used as a teaching tool, but we will also use the power it generates on campus”, says Glen Mowery, director of Utilities & Utilities, Facilities Management.  

The turbine’s electrical wiring will be connected to the existing power panel located in MSSB, making this unit interconnected to the University’s energy grid.

The wind turbine is part of the UI's evolving "green energy discovery district," roughly bounded by MSSB, the University Services Building and the UI Power Plant. The area engages several green energy technologies that include the new Energy Control Center on the third floor of the University Services Building, a solar E-car charging station to be constructed near MSSB, two types of photovoltaic/solar panel technologies on and adjacent to the new Cambus Maintenance facility, expansion of the biomass energy program at the UI Power Plant, a growing alternative fuel vehicle fleet, and the investigation into the revitalization of hydroelectric power. Several of these projects are the outcome of collaborative efforts between Facilities Management and the College of Engineering.

Wind Turbine on UI campusThe College of Engineering will use data collected from the turbine for use in several classes taught to Mechanical Engineering students, e.g. Experimental Engineering, Wind Energy, Fundamentals of Wind Turbines and Wind Power Management. The estimated total project installation cost is $26,646 and is being funded by a grant awarded to Professor Pablo Carrica, College of Engineering.

“The University is committed to growing our sustainable academic experience,” said Liz Christiansen, director of the Office of Sustainability. “The turbine will provide our students the opportunity to work first-hand with wind energy production."
