Achievements:

  • Dean of the College of Medicine from 1962 until 1969
  • Served as the University of Iowa’s vice president for health affairs under President Willard L. Boyd
  • Professor Emeritus in 1983 but continued active part-time service until his death
  • Ran the Blood Transfusion Service for the European theater during the Normandy invasion of World War II
  • The building was renamed from Health Sciences Library in his honor in 1988
  • A permanent exhibit honoring Dr. Hardin is located near Hardin Library’s third floor entrance

Description of facility:

The Hardin Library for the Health Sciences serves the combined information and research needs of the University of Iowa Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics (including related allied-health education programs), and the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders. The Library, built in 1974, combined the previously separate medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing, and speech pathology collections.
