In an effort to enhance campus safety efforts, Facilities Management Key & Access Services joined the Department of Public Safety on July 1, 2018.
Design & Construction leads a comprehensive and cooperative approach to planning, design and construction excellence in creating a campus that is consistent with the University of Iowa’s status as one of the nation’s leading academic/research institutions.

Building & Landscape Services is dedicated to campus building and landscape physical asset stewardship and customer service such as building operations, maintenance, landscape and custodial services.

The University of Iowa has established a comprehensive campus planning process that is driven by all academic, research, outreach, student life, patient care, and campus service programs. The foundation to the process is that the Unit (College) planning drives the space planning, master planning and campus development plans.
Facilities Management Capital Accounting is responsible for providing real time project updates and reconciliations via BuildUI for all major capital projects.

Custodial Services is dedicated to campus building stewardship and customer service through a variety of services including: cleaning classrooms, offices, restrooms, research labs, and public spaces; trash & recycle removal; routine and major floor care projects; and relamping.

Facilities Management is committed to efficient energy management programs such as Fault Detection & Diagnostics, energy audits, chilled water optimization, steam trap maintenance, and energy and utility information management.
FM Environmental Services ensures that the University of Iowa is in compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental laws and regulations throughout the design and construction process and beyond, including asbestos evaluation and abatement, stormwater discharge and maintenance, lead compliance, indoor air quality, and radon sampling.

FM monitors a set of fire protection requirements designed to provide a reasonable degree of safety from fire. It covers construction, protection, and operational features designed to provide safety from fire, smoke, and panic.

Design & Construction provides an important service in its partnership and collaboration with professional design firms for campus building interiors and spaces.

Landscape Services provides for the stewardship and maintenance of turf management; shrub and flower bed care; tree care; sidewalk maintenance; snow removal; institutional road maintenance; and litter control.

Maintenance Stores stocks maintenance and repair items including electrical, plumbing, hardware, carpentry, refrigeration, key supplies, sheet metal and tools. Maintenance Stores also includes a dispatch service transporting people as well as maintenance supplies and blueprints throughout campus.

Public Safety provide each member of the UI community with a sense of security throughout campus by creating a safe learning environment at all times and educating students, faculty and staff in matters of protection and personal responsibility.

Snow, dirt, and debris removal is carried out to create a clean and safe campus environment. Sidewalks are maintained under the broader care of hardscape areas including plazas, retaining walls/outcropping stones, parking lots, and institutional roads.
Facilities Information Services is responsible for space assignment, space planning and coordination, and recommendations regarding requests for campus space. Its services also support the campus long-range master planning needs and the annual on-going use of campus space.
The university maintains and implements a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit that addresses storm water issues on our campuses. Additionally, storm water discharge permits/NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System), and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans (SWPPPs) are maintained as required. Actions include reviewing and approving site plans, site monitoring, and outreach & education.

The UI Energy Collaborative provides reliable electricity, heating, and cooling to a 2,000-acre main campus, which is comprised of over 373 major buildings, including critical patient, research, and lab facilities. The system provides critical services to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, a research hospital that admits over 32,000 patients annually, providing backup in any grid failure.

The EPA establishes the Safe Drinking Water Standards and the Iowa DNR administers the Public Drinking Water Program in Iowa under delegation of authority from the EPA. University of Iowa water meets all EPA Safe Drinking water standards and testing.
